What is the best way to clean granite?

Care and maintenance of your new granite countertops is minimal. To clean on a daily basis, use water and mild soap (one that you wouldn’t mind washing your own hands in). Do not use household products such as glass cleaner, 409, etc. Granite specific cleaners, polishers, and sealers are available at most grocery stores, home stores, or discount department stores.

Cleaning Granite Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Do clean surfaces with mild detergent or granite cleaner
  • Do blot up spills immediately
  • Don’t use vinegar, lemon juice, or other cleaners containing acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, or tub & tile cleaners
  • Don’t use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers or soft cleansers

Do you install?

Yes. Installation is included in the price. On our $19 remnants, installation is not included.

How long will granite last?

Granite is almost a million years old when it is removed from the earth. Your new granite countertop will last forever.

How often does granite need to be sealed?

Surface Encounters has sealed your granite. You should reseal the surface every year for maximum protection from stains. You can tell if your countertops need to be sealed if the water soaks into the stone without beading up. Resealing may vary depending on porosity, density, hardness, and the elements the granite is exposed to.

Can I set a hot pot on my granite countertop?

Yes. Granite is formed by extreme heat and pressure combined beneath the earth’s crust. It cannot be affected by heat from a cook top or frying pan. Anything 500 degrees or less should be fine.

Can I chop with a knife on granite?

Knives will not scratch granite, however, cutting on your countertops is not recommended as your knives will dull very quickly. Damage may also occur on the surface over time in the way of light cut marks and eventually an abrasive surface.

I’ve seen friends with water marks on their granite, is this common?

Water or spills will not affect the finish unless it is left un-cleaned. Do not put a porous pot or planter on your counter for any length of time. It can release moisture, causing a mark or ring.

Can granite crack?

Although granite is durable, it can crack if you strike it with a heavy object. To be safe, use cutting boards and store heavy pots and pans in cabinets rather than on pot racks that hang over the countertop.

What if I get a chip in my granite?

Chips in granite are not common but they do happen. If a chip does occur and you find the piece that chipped out, save it. Most of the time, it can be adhered back into place.

Do you warranty the granite and installation?

Surface Encounters warrants to you, the original owner of products that were purchased, manufactured, and installed through our company, that we will repair, without charge, any defect that we determine was caused because of issues due to workmanship or installation of the product. This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear or damage caused by physical, chemical, or other abuse deemed intentional or unintentional.

What kind of sink should I use?

You can use just about any kind of sink. Most customers tend to use under mount sinks, at least in the kitchen. If you choose to use cast iron your cabinet installer or carpenter will have to provide extra support under the sink.

I’ve seen some granite counters that appear to have tiny cracks and pits in the surface. Are these defects?

No, these are not defects but rather natural characteristics of some stones. Keep in mind you are purchasing a rock, and not a manufactured product. Nearly every slab of granite will have variations in veining, fissures (small visible lines on the polished surface), natural mineral deposit concentrations, and “pock marks” of varying size which can affect the material’s ability to accept a polished finish. It’s these characteristics that add to the uniqueness of your countertop. If these characteristics do not appeal to you, we suggest researching our quartz products.

Can granite be used outside?

There are many styles of granite that are suitable for outside use. Silestone, Zodiaq, and other quartz products are not recommended for outdoor use.

How much overhang can there be without support?

12 inch overhangs or less are generally acceptable without support. Please see a sales team member about the specifics of your project.
